Wait, let me add a qualifier to that. Don’t simply start using the word “nifty” all willy nilly in any situation that requires a description. If you see an apartment building burning down and you’re an eyewitness on the news, don’t say “those tenants were running nifty!” Because that’s an adverb. It should be “Those tenants were running niftily.”
Time to debate on whether or not that’s a word… GO!

With the awkwardness officer right there? That takes guts. I guess he does have his hands full.
I did that the other day- was in a department store buying jewelery. Thought cashier was going to say “Have a nice day” so I ready myself to say “You too” when she ends up saying “Come back soon”. I said “you too” anyway.
You could have played it off like you meant it. “I meant for you to come back soon, since you’re so great of an employee it would be a shame if you got fired today and never came back after today” and then sprinted out the door because that’s actually kind of more awkward now that I think of it.
Well that’s okay, because I just got back from the dentist and she said “Thanks for coming” and I said “You too” again. Wish I had read this before hand so I could do something similar to what you suggested. XD
lol at “captain” – i once ran into an acquaintance at the store and told them to “have a nice day”, they just looked at me (awkwardly)

He’s a loveable fella, ain’t he? You just don’t want him at your dinner table with the in-laws. That can be awkwardness to the second power.
I have been inspired. I am going to quit writing and open a coatporium before the weather warms up.
Let me know when the grand opening is, and I’ll show up to monitor the awkwardness. the first person to jokingly say, “Cold enough for ya?” gets escorted out forcefully enough to set an example for the others.
I’ve always been a strong advocate for the use of “nifty”. In fact, I recommend placing the other excellent word “keen” as a handsome accompaniment to “nifty”.

That’s the first time my comic has ever been called nifty and/or keen. This is a special day.
I had a similar experience to Captain. Anticipating them to say “Have a nice day” I was ready to jump back with “you too” Instead she said “Goodbye! What is your favorite band?” Seemingly answering “you too” made an apparent ackward situation not ackward.
The gods of non-awkwardness shined upon you that day. If only we were all as fortunate.

I can’t tell you how many times the “You too” has happened to me. I always feel compelled to go back and explain myself, but then that would make things more awkward…
Truth, it’s best to just drop it, fall silent, and walk away. Still awkward, but it’s the least awkward choice.
Show a little sympathy for the awkward folks! It’s not like we WANT to look like friggin’ dorks!
I’m hoping to set up a chain of anti-awkwardness training in schools around the globe. I’ll let you know when they start opening and I’ll cut you a break on tuition, sound good?
